Cows Mourn

Email from a parishioner not at the Liturgy

A friend and l were walking up on the Downs towards Rodmell. It had justpassed 3 o'clock when we reached a field of cows. As we entered thefield, one of the cows starting mooing in this rather pained way, almost as though it was howling. Another one joined in as though indialogue but again with this the same kind of anquish. As we wanderedthrough the field more of the cows appeared to be joining in.Honestly, it sounded like they were wailing, it was quite terrifying. We then noticed a cow lying motionless on its side further up thefield. It could occasionally muster a slight twitch of the tail but itdidn't look too well. (medical opinion based on being an avid fan of'All Creatures Great and Small' as a child.) Anyway, as the torturedchorus of cows got increasingly louder given the coincidental time of day it felt eerily like a re-enactment of the Passion Play.
Verystrange. I have honestly never heard cows in such distress. It wasreally horrible.Strange things always happen to me on Good Friday. ...
