Thank you for those exquisite audio and visual feasts to celebrate the Orthodox Christmas.

Earlier this evening I watched more Orthodox ceremonies on a video just put up on the kto website. The programme showed Cardinal 23 and three of his Bishops on their visit to Russia in October. As well as Moscow they visited a monastery up near the Arctic circle which had been the first gulag where many Orthodox and Catholic Priests were martyred. It only reverted to being a monastery again in 1991.

I was interested to see what kind of headgear the Cardinal would wear in the cold climate and was surprised when he was shown in a black beret similar to those once worn by French country Priests! I thought cardinals had special birettas?

When the French clergy were asked of their impressions of the Russian church they replied that what impressed them the most was the devotion of the people and the beauty of the liturgy. Perhaps having returned to France they will remember this!

Incidentally Fr Ray today is St Raymond in France so Happy Feast Day to you!
