I hope so! ffn
Got a whole bunch of good pics of the event over at my place: http://hallowedground.wordpress.com/
I have to say that I hope so as well. I was never a big fan of the old staff. I know some people were criticizing it for various reasons and found it pretty controversial but I never got that. I just simply didn't like it and thought that it was quite ugly. But then I generally dislike modern art - especially in the Church.
I saw a picture of the same cross with Blessed John XXIII. Benedict continues his liturgical reconnections; intertwining theology, sacraments and liturgy,
There was nothing wrong with the cross used by Pope JOhn Paul II. Benedict looks as if he has been raiding the old tat cupboards in the Vatican Sacristies. The cope he wore on Sunday has obviously seen better days and is only fit for Benediction in a private chapel.
Red cope for Benediction?
Are sre you are a priest?
It seemed ok in the piazza to me.
The new (or should that be old?) cross is a huge improvement, it gives much more glory to God in my opinion.
Fr. Ray,
Pope John Paul's papal staff was the only thing about him that I disliked. The corpus with its near-vertical arms and protruding knees looked like it had been forged at a Polish steel works (or shipyard). It had a sort of "Solidarity" feel about it - the industrialized Christ.
It just isn't Pope Benedict's style and I am glad if he is retiring it.
