The word "Englishman" caught my attention here,
Yes, although they clearly say "Englishman" in the first paragraph, it turns out they are talking about (as Fr Blake says) an American with an Italian name.

Reading the article I think they meant English speaker rather than Englishman. Di Noia would be an excellent choice.
