For me, what is even more ultimately depressing than the harrowing testimonies of the evil inflicted on believers in Albania and other outposts of the "Workers' Paradise" is the continuing attitude of the opinion formers in the free West who take every opportunity to parade the evils of Nazism, but remain coolly reticent regarding the barbarity with which Communism was implemented and maintained.

Wearing Nazi regalia to a fancy dress party marks you out as a pariah. In comparison with what so many thousands of Catholics have endured in the c20, Cromwell seems a benign ruler. It is vitally important to publicise these atrocities in this country to put our own difficulties into context. I hope one result will be a strengthening of our own fidelity to the Church in an age of indifference, and another to help as much as we can financially, through Aid to the Church in Need, to rebuild the Church in these devastated countries. Most of us can spare generous contributions. We are far too complacent and inward looking, and too complaining about minor issues. It was good of you, Fr Ray, to post this item. Let's hope it distracts some of your commentators from cassocks and ferraiuolos.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
