Sola Burke

Wearing his scarlet zuchetto under his trilby Raymond Cardinal Burke was apparently the only prelate to appear at a small demonstration in the Piazza Santi Apostoli led by “Manif pour Tous—Italia”. Every other Cardinal and Bishop in Rome was otherwise engaged.

I know who I'd like to see in Peter's chair next time around. Didn't get him last time, but maybe, just maybe, next time. Could it be that this is God's way of giving the next pope the opportunity to stand up for the Faith and be truly seen by all to be doing so so fearlessly in the face of the enemy? I know I'm getting that impression. Is anyone else?

He answered, “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.” Genesis 18:32

But what if only one can be found, Lord?

In July, 2010, we marched in Buenos Aires against the so called Egalitarian Marriage Law.
There were a lot of smelly sheep there, but no pastors with us in that stench of defeat.

That was the day I knew...

J, that's been the general experience of all of us who try to fight these publicly- imposed grave evils. Without our spiritual and moral leaders. Sheep without a flock.

The next Manif pour Tous will be on the 2nd February in Paris, Lyon, Rome, Madrid, Warsaw, Brussels and Bucharest. I can't see London in the list at all.

It is the same with the Pro-Life marches which take place next weekend in Paris and presumably elsewhere? Why are we incapable of organising such events in Britain?

May God bless Cardinal Burke! What an inspiring witness that is,

Pelerin. Everyone is waiting to be introduced. :-D

Pelerin, it occurs to me it would be nice every parish had a pro-life/pro-family action committee or group. And the groups would get to know similar groups from other parishes in the deanery. That way you'd get a grass roots base. People who witness at abortion clinics, and/or help with drumming up monies for crisis pregnancies. [in the US it has been shown that ones a woman sees a scan of her baby, they are less likely to abort] These groups perhaps on monthly rota do the clinics, and keep abreast of pending legislation, organize petitions etc. And it would be nice if some office in the diocese would co-ordinate with the parishes in the deaneries. That way they wouldn't be so flat footed when the government pulled stunts and they could have more organized protests. I know they did try petitioning the government last year. It would also not hurt to co-ordinate some of these activities with evangelical protestant groups as well. Strength in numbers. Every believing Christian should be an ally in these matters. These groups need to express their concern to their MPs before this comes up.

Gem - you've got a point there about everyone waiting to be introduced! We are British after all!

An American friend has asked me why we are not like the Pro-life movement in the US which is so strong with amazing numbers turning out for their marches. We both attended a small march in London a couple of years ago - I forget who organised it now - but it was disappointing not to see more taking part.

In today's Daily Mail there is an article headed 'I fear that euthanasia will be legal in 10 years' It mentions that Belgium is now the European centre for what is euphemistically termed 'assisted dying.' Should we not also be campaigning against the introduction of such a law here?

We believe that
life should be protected at both ends of course but what are we doing to stop the authorities going ahead with their frightning plans - what can we do? You mention that there is strength in numbers which is true - but how do we get these numbers when so many seem so apathetic?

When I went to (Catholic) school back in the 80s I remember doing a whole term talking about and writing projects on cruelty to animals. We watched videos, read articles from the press and had class discussions about it. Abortion on the other hand was never touched upon, though oddly we did know that our R.E. teacher was pro-women priests and married clergy, she even taught us a poem about it. You want to know Pelerin why so many are apathetic, it's because they don't care. How can people care about something that hasn't been passed on to them. You can't be passionate about the Faith if you don't know it. You can't be passionate about the sanctity of life if you haven't been taught about the sacred. And you can't be passionate about defending Truth if you've been taught that the institution that exists to defend Truth is simply a tool through which the powerful suppress the weak. I hate to be all doom and gloom, but love of the Faith necessarily leads to love of life and beauty. Without love of the Faith all that holds Catholics together are certain common ceremonies that we've all been through: Baptism, First Holy Communion, Marriage, etc, and of course the Saturday evening, the Sunday morning, or the Sunday evening gathering in the local church. The Church is full of catholics but I sadly doubt that there are many Catholics still. However, give the Francis effect another year or two to really kick in though and I have no doubt that by then the pro-Culture of Life marches all over the Catholic world will be heaving with those his strong and uncompromising message will have brought back to the Faith.

Perhaps other prelates in Rome didn't attend because they didn't want to be seen as being "obsessive". You know, taking their example from the Holy Father now.
