Another Metal Hat

I was very taken by this picture on Fr Nick Scoffield's blog, of the great Bishop Challoner's silver mitre. I can't help thinking it looks just a little bit like a coal scuttle. I though it complemented JPII's Hungarian Triregno, which I put up earlier today.

Oh good heavens.
A SILVER mitre !

I wonder if Bishop Challoner wore it very much.
As a priest, he would presumably
have worked under the penal laws.

I think I once read he saw the Gordon riots.

What strange, difficult times they must have been.

Yes - my mum used to have a coal scuttle like that! Why is it being used as a book-end?

Looks well'ard. Perhaps the next Archbishop of Westminster could wear it along with matching armour and well sharponed crook.
I would be a foot soldier in THAT army

Gee whiz. Any idea how much that thing weighs? I imagine it's like having a bowling ball on your head. I read somewhere that every year before the Opening of Parliament the queen has the crown brought out of the vault so she can wear it around while in her private suite so she can get used to the weight on her head.
