Sound of the Protestant Reformation
Isn't this nifty?
The bibelregal is the sound of the Protestant Reformation,
Henry VIII owned several, he even a special regal tuner, Protestant Neuremberg produced them by the cartload. Luther, that wicked anti-semite with bowel problems had one, as did practically everyone in Protestant Europe, they were mass produced.
I must say I wouldn't mind someone giving me one, obviously not to accompany nasty Protestant hymn singing.

What an ugly and harsh sound! Especially when compared to the beauty and glory of Counter Reformation music.
But it's got to be better than some of the music in many local Catholic parishes week by week. Don't knock Protestant hymn singing until you have put your own house in order.

The sound is awful. Much prefer the mouth organ.

Sadly father so much of our music is up in the attic - so to speak- when it should be filling the halls and dormers under the attic! But I understand what you are saying:

I have heard some of Luther's Hymns sung with great gusto in Catholic Churches in Germany. On one Corpus Christi they accompanied the procession of the Host.

Nasty Protestant hymns written in major or minor keys in 4/4 time. Whatever next? Equal temperament so everything is slightly out of tune.

Independent - we are plagued with Lutheran hymn music in the Catholic church in Sweden. At least we don't get music by P*** I***** or B********* F****** but listening to the tunes is a good way of getting into the mood for suicide. It carries an insistent Protestant spirituality with it.
There are sporadic attempts to stamp it out - there is no need for it because Gregorian chant works quite well in Swedish.
Physiocrat - I sympathise with your mood and hope you do not have similar problems to Martin Luther. There is much beauty in Bach and his contemporaries and a universal church should not be afraid to draw upon beauty where it finds it. Like a Salvation Army leader once said that the Devil should not have the best tunes.
