What a picture! On the 13h news today from France 2 there is good coverage of the event showing of course the new french cardinal. It would appear that he overbalanced and almost fell in front of the Pope although no comment was made! Interviewed the new cardinal mentioned that he realised that he would be one of those who would vote for the next Pope - if this happened before he got to be 80. He is only 65 at present.

I wonder if they drew straws, sorted it out with a few rounds or rock, paper, scissors, or shot fingers? Great pic. Usually you see them in sartorial splendor, but I suppose this is the equivalent of wet weather "utilities." I can't quite make out from the picture what sort of footgear he has on. What say you, good padre?

It has been interesting to see that the France 2 evening news tonight did not show Cardinal Vingt-trois stumble at the Pope's feet. He must have felt dreadful at the time. The news also avoided any comment about his name and the number of cardinals created today - 23!
That Swiss Guard rig is amazing. Some years back around '99 or so, I took a history costume class. For a project, I decided to see what I could find out out about those glad rags the SG sport. I could scarce find a thing. Nada. Zilch. Zippity Doo-Dah. BUPKIS. I even wrote to the Vatican website, in vain I thought. No response. I figured it was round filed. YEARS later I just noticed on a Vatican site in the last six months, just the sort of info I'd have killed for. Honestly. Can I find the article now? No. I'd love to peer inside the mind of whomever designed their website. I want to see if he/she walks upright on two legs. It's like "they" took the contents of grandma's attic and scattered it across a swamp. [I think the article in question may be on their new website, and I can't think of the name, offhand. Do ya think they'd have a link to their new site on their old one? How American to think of such a thing. I love the Italians, but I think planning and logistics and organization died with the Caesars.]

I suppose the helmets need to be kept sprayed with WD40 to stop them getting rusty.
Lot of places have weird uniforms for their palace guards.
Totally agree with you about the Vatican website. I think they won the gold medal in the Most Difficult To Navigate and Find Anything Useful section of the internet competition.

Grazie to both Henry and Father Blake. And Sharon, I totally agree with you, I knew I couldn't be the only one who'd dearly love to wring the neck of whomever designed it. So help me, there must be a competition around somewhere to give a prize to that thing as "the worst professionally done website." Such an important website - and it looks like they let Guido's kid brother put it togther -- after he'd hit the vino bottle. Can I say it loads like a ***** too? I'm on dial up and I can make dinner before that "thing" loads.
So if any of you powers that be happen across this mini-rant = per piacere.... You'd think that Krau--er, His holiness, the Servant of the Servants of God would have his Germanic sense of Order ruffled by the thing by now.

Was it not Michael Angelo who designed the Swiss guards uniform or is it just a legend? He was not responsible for the website though!
The parchment wallpaper on the Vatican's website isn't bad, though. I saved it, changed the colour to green and used it for a website I set up.
