Horror of horrors

Marini to be named Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship.

If that is true then that is a repudiation of all Pope Benedict stood for and a return to something rather unpleasant in the corridors of the Vatican. It is not just an indication that the liturgical Reform of the Reform is ended but also the moral reform of the Curia is questionable too.

For many this is indisputably the most insensitive appointment Pope Francis could make, this is deliberately divisive and the biggest sign, so far, of where Pope Francis intends to take the Church.

If it is true.

Lord have mercy on us!

Try to get some sleep Father. I hope your heart isn't as deep into your boots as minecis at this news.

If it is true, you can forward my mail to Econe. No one else will be safe.

If true, it is distressing but not very surprising. I still recall seeing Francis emerge on the balcony the night of his election, flanked by men like Sodano and Re who wore smiles that could only be described as wolfish and triumphal. I knew in the moment that the Curialists had won and that little would change for the better, not in this Papacy anyway.

I would stripe my back bloody in penance if I could find a single priest around here competent to give spiritual direction.

Meanwhile a new movie about Pope Francis, 'Friend of the Poor', has 34 million dollar budget.

Prefect of CDW is also means a cardinal's hat. There are already enough/too many Italians in the College of Cardinals. I hope he at least plans to take a few red hats away from the Italian dioceses to compensate for these Italian curial heads.

I have just been reading that Pope Francis has said that we the laity are all infallible. (In the words of 'A Life of Brian' - 'I'm not!') Surely this statement cannot be true - there must be problems with the translation of what he says but more and more people seem to be getting worried whilst others are jubilant.

The security I felt under the pontificate of Pope Benedict has vanished - for the moment - but I don't intend jumping ship.

If true, it may be the proverbial last straw for many. Some may become outspoken and bellicose; others may lose heart, and find a nice rock to crawl under and hide in hopes that a day will come when the storm has passed.

I am scouting a few rocks out myself.

Pax.

Pelerin,
It is unclear but I think what he means is that if we hold to what the Church teaches then everyone is 'infallible' in that teaching.

Thus when I speak about the reality of the Eucharist or the Immaculate Conception, I speak infallibly.

It's the other Marini who needs our prayers; Pope Benedict's estimable MC Francis won't let go so he can learn from Francis about more simple liturgical celebrations.
I dunno. I'm beginning to feel like a recusant in my own church!

The thing I would find most depressing about P. Marini getting this job, apart from the insult to beloved Pope Benedict, and the horror of having such a one governing and advising bishops throughout the world on liturgical matters, is that is really signals that Pope Francis is just reinstating the old-guard, and that perhaps the longed-for reform of the behemoth of the Italianate curia is not going to happen now any more than it was before!

Booted out by Papa Ratzi (rightly so), brought back and promoted by Francis, the Bishop of Rome. What can this mean ?

What a betrayal this would be. As an ex-sspx'er drawn back by Good Pope Benedict, who in consequence has been scorned by sspx relatives, who has adhered (almost alone in this part of the world) at great personal cost to church teaching on contraception and is as a result been blessed with 5 kids - our loyalty and sacrifice is being spat on.

The rumor began because the Italian Wikipedia entry for Marini read:

e: "Il 28 settembre 2013 è stato nominato da papa Francesco Prefetto della Congregazione per il Culto divino e la Disciplina dei Sacramenti. È uno specialista in liturgia cristiana e autore di varie opere sull'argomento. Tra queste Liturgia e Bellezza. Nobilis Pulchritudo, pubblicato nel 2005."

It's now gone. Seems whoever the Italian jokester was has removed it.

Whether this is true or not I am here in Rome at the moment and was greatly disappointed when I went to the "Latin Mass" scheduled for 5.00pm in St Peter's today.

According to all the Mass times advertised outside St. Peter's, the 5.00 o'clock Mass is in "Latin" from Monday to Saturday. However, Mass began and the packed international congregation was treated to a feast of Italian from start to finish - not even the ordinary of the Mass contained any Latin. It might as well have been in Cantonese as far as I was concerned.

Thar seems to be trouble at t'mill!!!

Pelerin: Infallibility can happen when ALL the faithful are united in believing something. The question is "who are the faithful?" They have to be guided and obedient and they most certainly include the Pope and the Bishops. This is what Lumen Gentium says:

12. The holy people of God shares also in Christ's prophetic office; it spreads abroad a living witness to Him, especially by means of a life of faith and charity and by offering to God a sacrifice of praise, the tribute of lips which give praise to His name.(110) The entire body of the faithful, anointed as they are by the Holy One,(111) cannot err in matters of belief. They manifest this special property by means of the whole peoples' supernatural discernment in matters of faith when "from the Bishops down to the last of the lay faithful" (8*) they show universal agreement in matters of faith and morals. That discernment in matters of faith is aroused and sustained by the Spirit of truth. It is exercised under the guidance of the sacred teaching authority, in faithful and respectful obedience to which the people of God accepts that which is not just the word of men but truly the word of God.(112) Through it, the people of God adheres unwaveringly to the faith given once and for all to the saints,(113) penetrates it more deeply with right thinking, and applies it more fully in its life.

It's a good job the Ordinariate got their Mass signed off before any change in the leadership of the CDWDS. I can't see P. Marini agreeing to the restoration of the Tridentine prayers at the foot of the altar, including the whole of Ps 42(43), the Tridentine Offertory prayers or the Last Gospel. How this can be considered as part of the Anglican patrimony is beyond me, and it is somewhat ironic that Ordinariate priests can use this in addition to the MR (editio typica tertia) in English or Latin and the Missal of 1962, whereas the rest of the clergy do not have this option.
