His brother said he thought this trip home would be the Pope's last, partly because of his age and the huge costs involved.
"He is no longer the youngest, and looking at it from a practical point of view, it is questionable whether he will come again," said Georg Ratzinger, 82.
The brothers will meet on Wednesday for lunch, a siesta and a walk around the garden of the Pope's house where he lived when he was Prof Joseph Ratzinger at Regensburg University in the 1970s.
The Pope is expected to use the visit to emphasise his belief that Europeans need to return to their Christian roots, amid evidence that Germans are turning away from the Church.
At least 5,000 police will be on duty throughout the stay, with pilgrims walking for three hours to reach Masses in Munich and Regensburg.
Some Church leaders have criticised Bavarians for cashing in on the visit, by producing everything from "Benedict beer" to "Pope hats".
The maker of a "Ratzinger sausage" in Marktl am Inn was forced to stop production. "Grilling the Pope is not appropriate," said a local politician.
