Modern Rites: Mormonism

This appeared on my Youtube feed: filming from within a Mormon Temple.

I cannot think of anything more American than Mormonism. One forgets how important ritualism and secret rites were in early 19th century religious revival.

How weird!!
I have cousins in the USA who are Mormons, indeed 1 is a bishop. They always looked so sensible!!

Hence, the LDS leadership has always been aiming for the Presidency.

I am reminded of the scene in the film of "The Wizard of Oz" where Dorothy finally encounters the Wizard!

David O, is there something unsensible about what you saw in the video? Was it anymore unsensible than the slaughtering of animals in the ancient temples of Jehovah?

Matt R, you are scraping the bottom of the barrel with that claim, my friend.

Patricius, in this version of the Wizard of Oz, sacred covenants are made to follow Jesus Christ, serve others, be honest, be chaste, etc. How can that be a bad thing? These covenants are the source of the reputation for good character that Mormons are widely known for.

Rituals and secret rites? Yes. But I don't think that's exclusively American. Joseph Smith WAS a mason - and he didn't pull that out of whole cloth from America.

Is it your turn this week to write the Romney hit piece? No sane Catholic in the US is voting for Comrade Obowmao. The Mormon over the abortion loving Obomination any time. Mitt's not trying to make anyone wear funny underwear. But Comrade 0's rules WILL throw leaders of Catholic hospitals, charities and business in jail, ultimately if they don't knuckle under to HIS rules of forcing said institutions to pay for blood on their hands with making them pay for abortion, etc. Close your charity/business/hospital etc or provide to pay for abortions or go to jail. What's it going to be?

Muslims? They don't have to follow that -- THEY get a pass.

Anyone seeing the Mass for the first time might consider it weird. This is the classic semiotic problem. When the signified is in the spiritual realm, the signifier cannot but appear weird.

Effective signifiers will include unusual forms of music eg modal and polyphonic, a special language, special clothing, special gestures and a highly formalised choreography. Which is why the Tridentine Mass was such an effective teacher and builder of faith.

As soon as those elements are removed, people will wander off, as has been happening in the Catholic church for the past forty years.

There is an important lesson to be learned from these Mormons.

Perhaps, but the Mass is utterly exoteric. Like the camera that adds ten pounds, the esoteric adds a layer of weird.

This film which doesn't contain anything against the Natural Law was taken without the knowledge or consent of the participants therefore I think it should be removed from your blog.

I believe you need to take it up with YouTube rather than this blog.
