A Short History of Lachrymatory Bottles
Very occassionally one sees these as votive offerings around European shrines of Our Lady of Sorrows.
But I can imagine a aged aunt of mine sending one to a neglectful son. Similarly I can imagine some soul sending them to Our Lady saying, "I've wept a quarter pint and still my prayer hasn't been answered". What a danger tears and emotions are in the spiritual life.
