Peter says, "they are not drunk for it is only the third hour." Acts of the Apostles 2:15.
Amethyst, (a-methusko in Greek), means 'not to be intoxicated'. Therefore bishops wearing the traditional amethyst ring are stating they are successors of the Apostles.
Just to horrify a Bishop or two, remember you get a partial indulgence from kissing a Bishop's ring, amethyst or not.

Does the bishop of Southwark wear an Amethyst ring?
Oh you mean...
How sad that the rites of the Church would horrify any bishop.
When I was confirmed way back in the last century I kissed the Bishops ring...and I have had a charmed life ever since
If one tried to kiss a Bishop's ring these days one would most likely be excommunicated. Do they all wear them.....one can't be sure...some Bishops are reluctant to wear episcopal dress.......so there you are...........out with kissing the ring........partial indulgence or not........
