For those of us who think the Beijing Olympics are just a touch vulgar, here is something a little more English. The cigarette whilst in goal, those were days!
Comments on the dress of the participants will be rejected!
At Matins/the Office of Readings on Holy Saturday the Church gives us this 'ancient homily', I find it incredibly moving, it is abou...

This is a riot! And yes, the ciggie is a nice touch. Now all sportsmen are "too professional."
[For the days when Sparky Lyle used to chew tobacco when pitching...once the tobacco juice accidentally got swallowed and he threw behind the pitcher's mound in Yankee Stadium.]
Karen,
You are almost English!
What can I say, I got hooked on Wordsworth's daffodils so soon. And I have always coveted the queen's corgis, or at least her gold plate.
I don't think you do it in cricket, but in "Friendly" games of softball, it is not uncommon for an infielder to stash a can (if you can stash a can in plain sight) of beer or soda right on the infield next to you, if you don't think a ball is likely to get hit to a certain spot. Btw, last comment I meant to say Sparky "threw UP"!
I regretted telling my dad when I was in college that I intended to sign up for the women's rugby team. [The rugby teams had the best parties.] I'd played field hockey the academic quarter before and he thought nothing of it. He forbade me, and probably saved me from breaking an elbow, because on reflection I probably would have been put in the scrum! I missed some good parties on account of that. I should have just done it and told him afterwards. I think he was afraid he'd passed on the "break their leg" gene. He was a scrawny kid who'd managed to break an opponent's leg once when he was in high school. I asked if he'd done it on purpose. and he said "accidentally on purpose." No foul or anything, just "oh well...." [This was US football.]
The opening ceremony struck me as some sort of five hour long hideous secular pontifical high "mass" gloifying Man instead of God and ending with the lighting of a false paschal candle.
At least we can guess that the London Games will be the "Utility Olympics".
Whilst there will be so much focus on the Olympics, a reminder to pray for the Catholic faithful who suffer so much in China for their loyalty to Christ and his Church.
I probably sound like a 'party pooper' but I just can't work up the enthusiasm for the Chinese Olympics. China's human rights record is so terrible, and the Olympics has become like some kind of monument to man's admiration of himself.
So I shan't be watching...
More time to pray for persecuted Chinese Christians (and their persecutors).
