This is a rather excellent programme.

In this programme a reference is made to Papal power being used to defend and expand the Holy Roman Empire. I read somewhere that the Holy Roman Empire never used violence to extend ir's empire, only to defend or reclaim against violent attacks upon her. Do you know if this is true.
