View from my Guest Room

If you stand on a chair in my guest room you see the end of the now derelict West Pier, a huge flock of starlings roost there.
I found this video on Laurence's blog.

Way cool!!! Good thing you don't have a car, you'd always be cleaning the thing! I'm not even going to ask why the window is position such that you have to use a chair to see out of it. We already know your rectory (or is that presbytery in the UK?) has its quirks, give if you put your laptop on a certain shelf in the upstairs bathroom you can pick up free wifi. I've always thought that amongst all the bloggers out here in the "Catholic realm" you try to cover up that "inner geek" the most!

We have a place in New Jersey, just as derelict as your pier in Brighton. Asbury Park, NJ, once the gem of the 'Jersey Shore', now is awaiting re-gentrification by a few groups of investors. It had its own beauty pageant, rivaling Atlantic City's, and a baby Easter parade. Since the 80's it looks like your West Pier. Pray for such places , that they could be beautiful again!

Did you know it's called a Murmuration?

Marc. When I was a child in the late 50s and 60s I saw the tail end of Asbury park's "glory days." It was the first place I saw the shore. It was beautiful. I was sad to read in later years how run down it had become. I hope it comes back too.
[All except for those mean little side shows where for a nickle or a dime you dropped a coin in a slot and a poor chicken or other some such creature did a "trick" for a little bit of food.]

I've always liked the collective nouns for birds: a charm of goldfinches, a pitying of turtle doves, a scolding of jays, an unkindness of ravens, a stare of owls, a convocation of eagles (sounds like a Vatican conclave)and, my own favourite, an exaltation of larks.
I hope the debris of the West Pier is left as it is. it looks wild and mysterious in its noble decay.

I used to think the West Pier was horrid, but now it has grown on me. Not literally, of course. A murmuration of starlings! Love it!

Yes I saw the starlings doing their wonderfully graceful dance above Churchill Square a couple of evenings ago. I stood there mesmerized - they reminded me of shoals of fish as they constantly changed direction.

Thanks Clare for telling us it's called a mumuration.
