Jericho is literally the lowest inhabited place on Earth.
Jerusalem, at least theolgically is the highest. One descends to Jericho.
The traveller represents mankind, between highest and lowest, he is set upon and is left for dead, wounded and naked.
The priest with the sacrifices of Old Law can do nothing for him, neither can the Levite.
It is the Samaritan, the Rejected One, Christ alone who can heal him.
He does it through annointing him with oil, and by pouring wine over his wounds - the sacraments.
He takes him to the inn - the Church - where Christ will eventually return.

That is a beautiful meditation.

This is the historic interpretation of the Parable. It is only in the last few years that it was replaced by the 'be kind to your neighbours' interpretation we hear in Sermons.
