Suicides

I have just spent the afternoon with a man who phoned up and told me he was going to kill himself. I went round to see him, he was cooking a late lunch and the worst for booze. I got the distinct impression he had phoned every priest and clergyman in Brighton.

Say a prayer for him.

But you were the only one who cared enough to visit him?

May God reward you for your efforts and care Fr. Ray.

I once had a friend who was planning suicide. Fortunately this was nearly twenty years ago and dear Mgr. Gilbey was still alive. As I was the only one my friend would let reasonably close to him I reported all detials to the good Mgr. and implemented his prudent advice. It worked and the 'black mood' eventually passed and my friend is alive today.

Whilst I did the talking the guidance and prayer work were all Mgr. Gilbeys.

Of course I would be happy to say a prayer for all lonely, depressed and suicidal people, God help them.

My in law took his own life last week. Please pray for all suicides. Those family memebers who are left behind suffer greatly too. It is such a tragic event. Senseless actually.

I will pray for him at Mass tomorrow.

Fr. Ray,

We have had problems in our neighbourhood for a while with a dog that is left outside in a back yard and keeps barking late into the night.

Some neighbours finally complained recently and it emerged that the dog-owner's husband committed suicide a few years ago.

Now, rather than cursing when I hear the dog barking, I use it as a reminder to pray for the repose of the soul of the deceased man. Funnily enough, it seems to quieten the dog down a little.

I recommend the soul of this man to Mary the Mother of Sorrows.

God bless you, Father. Would that my own brother had accepted such help. Suicide is a terrible thing. I'll pray for this man and for you.

God bless you Father. My own work with suicide at the moment makes me painfully aware how tragic each and every case is.
